| Immediately after the devastating earthquake
on 8th October 2005 in Pakistan, the World Memon Organisation, Pakistan
Chapter in association with All Pakistan Memon Federation started the relief work
in the affected areas by providing food, medicines, tents, clothes, cash, etc.
A medical camp was setup in association with All Pakistan Memon Federation
and Patel Hospital at H-11, Islamabad.
After the emergency relief work, it was thought appropriate to carry out Rehabilitation
Project for Earthquake Victims. Houses with tin-roofs and hollow cement blocks
are being constructed with the help of the local people. The total cost of one
such house is Rs.100,000 (US $1670 ) out of which 70% of the cost is being financed
by World Memon Organisation, Pakistan Chapter and 30% is paid by the local people.
165 houses have already been constructed out of which 70 houses have been built
in Thala (Birot – situated at 7000 feet above sea level) and 60 houses have been
built in Shanghreri (10,500 feet above sea level). And 35 houses have been constructed
in Kala-Dacca (Tha Kot – 7500 feet above sea level). Ten houses are under construction
in Shanghreri. We intend to construct another 115 houses in the earthquake affected
areas.
A school which was completely destroyed in the earthquake affected area of
Thala, Birot is being reconstructed. A mosque situated at Thala, Birot which was
badly damaged is being rebuilt. A small dispensary for the benefit of the local
people has been built in Thala, Birot.
The local people have renamed their villages in appreciation of the contribution
of the Memon community as under: THALA (BIROT) renamed as DHOKE
MEMON
SHANGHRERI renamed as MEMONABAD
KALA-DACCA renamed as MEMON NAGAR
We have built a cemented road measuring 4.5 kms in Shanghreri which is 10,000
feet above sea level. The cemented road has been named as ‘MEMON STREET. A
big water tank along with water supply lines has been built at Memonabad (Shanghreri)
which supplies potable water to different parts of the village. |
